Under John’s leadership, Holder Properties has developed over 11 million square feet of commercial and residential space valued in excess of $2 billion. Included in over 90 developed projects are corporate headquarters, call centers, data centers, speculative offices, student housing, and special use facilities completed throughout the United States.
Over the past twelve years, Holder Properties has developed nine properties in the Charleston area totaling over 800,000 square feet and representing an investment of over $200 million in this community. Overall, they’ve developed 17 projects across South Carolina totaling over 2.4 million square feet and investing over $500 million in the state.
Their Charleston area developments include five in the Faber Place Executive Office Park: Ashley Overlook, Faber Centre, Faber Pointe, College of Charleston Lowcountry Graduate Center and the new River Oaks Center. Downtown they developed 25 Calhoun Street and 174 Meeting Street and on Daniel Island they developed Central Island Plaza and are close to completion of the new headquarters for Blackbaud.
After graduating from Furman University with a business degree, John began his career in banking with the Fulton National Bank (now part of Bank of America) before going to work for Holder Construction Company, then Holder Properties.
John has been honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award at Furman University and The Lovett School. He was also named Developer of the Year by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and received the Order of the Magnolia from Columbia’s City Center Partnership. He is a former board chair of the Lovett School, the Midtown Atlanta Business Association, and the Piedmont Driving Club. He is on the Furman University and Carter Presidential Center advisory boards and serves on the Fox Theatre board as well as the regional Suntrust Bank board. Over his career, he’s participated on boards and or raised funds for the United Way, Goodwill Industries, the American Heart Association, Boy Scouts, and the March of Dimes, among others.
John also serves on two public company boards, Genuine Parts Company (owns NAPA Auto Parts plus numerous other industrial companies) and Oxford Industries (owns Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer and Southern Tide, among others).
John and Jill have been married for 38 years and are parents of Laura Menkes and Robert Holder.
